Rather than list all of the new features, which you can read about on the Foursquare Blog, I want to give a quick run-down on what this means for customers and businesses using the application.
Foursquare has made it easier for users to choose tips and select locations that they want to store for future reference by making them more obvious through the new interface. This changes the focus away from simply checking into as many venues as possible and getting to the top of the leaderboard toward using the app like a city-wide To-Do list.
Mashable's theory is that we will soon be seeing "Add To My Foursquare" buttons on websites, much like the way we see facebook "Like" or "Tweet" buttons above news articles and blog posts. For organisations, this would be a major development in that venues would be able to attract foursquare users to their business through the content they provide on their sites.
You can see a real example of the "Add To My Foursquare" button on this post from Zagat.
For example, a restaurant may post an article telling people that their new menu is half price on Tuesdays, from which users could "Add To Foursquare" for future reference. Then with the improved functionality of adding "Tips", the user could add a review and share it among their friends, who could in turn add it to their To-Do list and enhance the word-of-mouth cycle.
If you have any thoughts on the new Foursquare app we'd live to hear from you. Let us know in the comments below.
