Google Takes Social Search Up A Notch

We all know that Social Media has changed the way people discover, share and interact with information. In the war for relevance, Google just last week announced further changes to how Google search results will display more information from your friends and co-workers if you are logged in with your Google account. Google introduced the first version of Social Search back in October 2009 but there are 3 main changes in this release:

  1. Social Search results are mixed through organic search results, based on their relevance to you. This means you'll start to see more results with annotations from your friends and colleagues.
  2. Social Search is more comprehensive with notes for links people have shared on Twitter and other sites. This is based only on people you are connected to such as people you follow on Twitter (a setting you can enable through your Google Profile) and is visible only to you when you are logged in with your Google Account.
  3. Google is providing more control over how you connect your Social Media profiles through your Google Account. And if Googles algorithms find a public account that might be yours becuase the usernames are the same you are invited to connect the accounts from the search results page.

This highlights just how important Social Media, and how having access to the social graph is shaping search results, is to Google. More and more there is no number 1 on Google, as every searcher will see different results

For brands wanting to be found, this further illustrates how critical a robust Social Media Strategy is, including regular content sharing, commenting & tweeting to ensure the right search signals are being sent to Google. Now more than ever brands need to be authentically connecting with their customers and followers to ensure you win the war for relevnace.

Take a few moments to become familar with Social Search and check out the video below. As always we love your feedback so let us know if you are seeing social results returned on your search page and how relevant they are to you.
